President

Term:
2017 to 2020

Danielle Funderburg, a resident since 2003, has served on the board of education since 2008. She and her husband Gerod, have two adult children, graduates of the Romulus Community Schools’ (RCS) district. Funderburg is a freelance graphic designer and a first generation graduate from Oakland University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. She understands the importance and value of education and devotes her time fostering programs in Romulus that promote attaining post-secondary credentials beyond high school, including associate and bachelor degrees and professional/technical certifications.

Serving on the leadership team for Wayne County College Access Network, WCCAN, (formerly Project A.C.E.), since 2011, she has connected our students with much needed scholarship dollars. WCCAN and RCS, closely collaborate with businesses, colleges and universities harnessing resources like our partnership with Michigan State University-College Access Counselor and services, such as FAFSA completion, for Romulus students and families.

She also serves on the executive board for Wayne County Association of School Boards, WCASB [since 2013]; Romulus High School Band Boosters [since 2010]; a member of Word of Faith International Christian Center; a former parent coordinator (Wick) and various committees throughout the district. Mrs. Funderburg has achieved her MASB Level 4, Master Board Member Award; Advocacy Skills Specialty Award; and Data Specialty Award.

Vice President

Theresa Beard was appointed to the Board of Education in November 2009 and then elected in May 2010 for a 4-year term. She is currently serving her second term. Mrs. Beard is a lifelong Romulus resident and a Romulus Senior High graduate, Class of 1979. Theresa is married with two sons. Mrs. Beard was the recipient of the 2009 Michigan Council of Exceptional Children Exceptional Parent of the Year award. Mrs. Beard has been the representative for Romulus Community Schools on the Wayne County Parent Advisory Committee since 2002. She has held various officer positions on the WCPAC executive board and is a member on various subcommittees. She is also a member of the Michigan Transition Services Association. Mrs. Beard was also the parent coordinator for Barth Elementary and involved with the Barth PTC as an executive board member for many years. Through various trainings Mrs. Beard has received the MASB Level 5 – Master Diamond Award and also the Advocacy Skills Specialty and Data Specialty Awards.

Secretary

Robert McLachlan has lived in Romulus more than 22 years.  Prior to moving to Romulus, he served on the Westwood Board of Education from 1985-1993.  He and his wife, Theresa (who is the Director of Business and Finance at Southgate Community Schools), have two adult children, both graduates of Romulus.  Mr. McLachlan also served on the Romulus Board of Education from 2009-2013, and was the driving force behind bringing the Romulus Early College Program to the district.  Mr. McLachlan is a Master Diamond-Certified School Board Member through the Michigan Association of School Boards, holding Advocacy and Data specialty certification.

In his years of school board service, Mr. McLachlan has held every officer position, and served on curriculum, policy, personnel, healthy living, finance, and many other committees.  From 2009-2012, he represented Romulus Community Schools on the Michigan Association of School Boards' Government Relations Committee.

Mr. McLachlan served many years in the Scouting program in Romulus, served many years in the Romulus Band Boosters, and also is a member of the Romulus Advisory Council for the Romulus Boys & Girls Club, where he coordinates fund raisers that to date have raised nearly $100,000 for our kids.  He is a member of the Garden City Rotary Club, where he is past president and serves on its foundation board.  In 2016, Mr. McLachlan founded the JORY Children's Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to provide educational, nutritional, and recreational support to financially and/or socially disadvantaged children.

Treasurer

Ulanda Caldwell has been a resident of the City of Romulus since 2005. Ulanda lives with the rewards and challenges of providing for a single parent household.  She has two sons and knows all too well that last minute adjustments in the daily household operations can create a tremendous emotional shift for everyone.  To that end, she has been very active in multicultural grassroots efforts of promoting community growth and transparency. Ulanda is the Treasurer of the Michigan Democratic Party Justice Caucus, a member of the Advisory Council of the TSA Senior Alliance – Agency on Aging of Wayne County as well as a Delegate for the Michigan Senior Advocates Council.

Ulanda is a Business Analyst consultant, with policies/procedures, strategic planning and project/risk management implementation experience. She has completed the MBA (Nonprofit) portion of the dual Master’s degree program at Lawrence Technological University and will receive her Masters in Global Leadership Management upon the completion of 3 courses. Ms. Caldwell has completed the MASB Level- 1 certified Board Member Award Certificate.

Tom Kuderik has lived in Romulus his entire life and is a graduate of Romulus Senior high school. He and his wife Pam (also an RHS graduate) have two boys who both graduated from Romulus Senior high school. In addition to his current term as vice president, Tom is a past president and secretary of the Romulus board of education and has served on the district technology, board finance and personnel committees. Tom has worked with Romulus children for many years through his affiliations with the Boy Scouts of America, the Romulus Flyers, Romulus Little League, Early Childhood Development and the Romulus Rotary. Mr. Kuderik served in the Army from 1982-1989 and received an honorable discharge. Mr. Kuderik holds the MASB Master Board Member certificate.

Devan Safford has lived in Romulus for 15 years.  An avid volunteer, she contributes countless service hours with her husband and two children in and around the Romulus community.  As a member of the Board of Education, she has completed coursework with the Michigan Association of School Boards while continuously seeking new opportunities to help strengthen Romulus Community Schools. Devan Safford earned a Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University with concentrations in organizational communication, philosophy and management. She later earned a Master of Arts from Wayne State University in organizational communication and public relations.

With more than ten years of professional experience she has served at several of Michigan’s leading higher education institutions to include Macomb Community College and Wayne State University.  She has been employed at Wayne State University for twelve years, developing impactful programs and is insistently committed to the future and accessibility of high quality education for all students.
