Matthew Williams is a 5th grade student leader at Barth Elementary. Matthew is an accomplished gymnast, beginning when he was 6 yrs old. He has 3 State Championship Titles. As part of the USAG Jr. Olympic program, he competes on 6 events; Floor, Pommel Horse, P-Bars, Hi-Bar, Rings and Vault. He trains 17-20 hours per week. Matthew will begin to compete at the national level, when he is 11. He hopes to one day make the USA National Elite Team and the Olympics. Matthew also plays highly competitive travel baseball, during the spring/summer, where he doubles his training schedule so he can enjoy both sports.
Matthew is well aware of the costs it requires to continue to compete at a high level. In order to help his parents pay for his absorbent gymnastics training costs, Matthew and his family, vacuum over 25,000 sq. ft. of his training facilities, 3 times a week. He is a very responsible and dedicated young man.
Academically, Matthew is focused on being the best he can be. He has been an all A Honor Roll student his entire time at Barth Elementary. He is among the top students of his class and district. He’s a member of the “Leader In Me” program and recently won the 5th Grade-Romulus District-Wide Spelling Bee.
Matthew represented Barth Elementary and the state of Michigan on April 10-12, in Indianapolis, at the 2015 USAG Jr. Olympic Region 5 Championships; where he competed among the best gymnasts from MI, IL, OH, KY and IN. He won the Gold Medal in the vault, the Bronze Medal in the High Bar, and placed an astounding 4th place as the overall All-Around best gymnast out of the best 133 gymnasts from MI-IL-IN-KY-OH.
