Students at Romulus High School are learning how to swim thanks to free swim classes offered by instructors from the YMCA in Southgate. The partnership has benefitted students who are enrolled in Karen Morelli’s self-contained classroom, as well as students in Mrs. Mancilla’s Learning Independence for Transition Program (LIFT). Originally the class was designed to be an eight week course, but thanks to student interest and the commitment from the YMCA it has continued as an ongoing program. “We are very fortunate to have this program at RHS. The instructors have provided one-on-one training for our students, who for some had never been in the water before” said Mancilla. The swim classes train individual’s to respect the water and build confidence while learning how to swim.
