As part of the Black History Month celebrations, Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Rice's first grade classes constructed a Freedom Quilt. Students first listened to books about slavery during colonial times, the Underground Railroad, and how Freedom Quilts were used to communicate by escaping slaves. Students picked a quilt pattern to learn more about and completed a writing piece with their teacher explaining the meaning of the pattern. Students chose a personal pattern to color for their quilt block. The individual blocks were then sewn into a complete quilt, the students were proud of their team accomplishment.
