Rep Geiss Reads to Wick

Rep Geiss March 2017

As a part of the celebration of March as Reading Month, State Representative Erika Geiss recently stopped by Wick Elementary to read to both classes of first graders. Representative Geiss read the book “I’m New Here” during her visit, and took questions from the students about the story as well as her job as an elected official. Freedom Quilt

As part of the Black History Month celebrations, Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Rice's first grade classes constructed a Freedom Quilt. Students first listened to books about slavery during colonial times, the Underground Railroad, and how Freedom Quilts were used to communicate by escaping slaves. Students picked a quilt pattern to learn more about and completed a writing piece with their teacher explaining the meaning of the pattern. Students chose a personal pattern to color for their quilt block.

Congrats, Mrs. Hall! You're Jay Towers in the Morning's Teacher of the Week!

Mrs. Hall has been an amazing 3rd grade teacher so far to my daughter! She is kind and very informational and focuses on every student and their higher learning. My daughter has become great at math and English due to her methods. She even taught me a new math trick that I wish I knew when I was in school! What stood out the most for me though is she got every one of her students a scarf she made herself and gloves for Christmas! She's an amazing teacher and definitely deserves an award for best teacher!

Wick Celebrates Black History Month

Wick Elementary’s annual Black History Month program was held on Friday, February 24, 2017. This year in addition to the assembly, classes also welcomed parents into their rooms with presentations that connected various aspects of Black History to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) components. Following the assembly and class presentations, parents and students enjoyed a Soul Food Luncheon in the gymnasium.
