Black History Month

The Art of Story Telling

On February 23rd, 2018 Elizabeth James a third generation African American storyteller from the University of Michigan visited Barth Elementary to help celebrate African-American History Month. The Barth Elementary African-American committee invited the multi-talented storyteller to come out and share her breathtaking African-American folktales with the students. Mrs. Lloyd a teacher at Barth Elementary said,

“We were very elated to have her share such rich African-American stories from around the world with our students, Mrs. James did a phenomenal job.”

Wick Celebrates Black History Month

Wick Elementary students, parents and staff all recently came together to celebrate Black History Month with a schoolwide assembly. Classes performed skits, plays, or songs to commemorate significant individuals and events that have impacted our nation’s history and culture. Pictured are some of the many students that performed: Jaylen, Madison, Alaya, Josiah, Mrs. ShaVonna Johnson (Principal), John and William.

Freedom Quilt

As part of the Black History Month celebrations, Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Rice's first grade classes constructed a Freedom Quilt. Students first listened to books about slavery during colonial times, the Underground Railroad, and how Freedom Quilts were used to communicate by escaping slaves. Students picked a quilt pattern to learn more about and completed a writing piece with their teacher explaining the meaning of the pattern. Students chose a personal pattern to color for their quilt block.

Wick Celebrates Black History Month

Wick Elementary’s annual Black History Month program was held on Friday, February 24, 2017. This year in addition to the assembly, classes also welcomed parents into their rooms with presentations that connected various aspects of Black History to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) components. Following the assembly and class presentations, parents and students enjoyed a Soul Food Luncheon in the gymnasium.
